Indonesia

Keterlibatan Indonesia

Rezim Soeharto menentang kemerdekaan Timor Portugis.

Indonesia 's involvement

The Soeharto regime opposed independence for Portuguese Timor. It believed Timor was too backward to be independent, that Timor was originally part of Indonesia and that communist powers might use Timor to destabilize Indonesia .

Starting in 1974 Indonesia used political influence, propaganda, manipulation and threats to prevent Timor becoming independent.

Operasi Komodo was established and recruited soldiers like Colonel Dading Kalbuadi, who had previously worked to secure a pro-integration 'act of free choice' in West Irian.Indonesia also used its strategic position to win international support, including from figures like US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.
